Should I wait for the iPhone 5 or get the Verizon iPhone 4?

"Should I get a Verizon iPhone 4 or wait for the new iPhone 5 that is expected sometime in the summer?" This is the number one question come with the Verizon iPhone announcement this month. Most are saying to wait for the iPhone 5 due to the short wait of another 5-6 months and the exciting new possibilities of new technology that is going to come out.

The problem is that no one knows for sure what Apple's plans are, which means you'll have to decide whether to get your iTunes-loving, app-downloading' self an iPhone 4 on Verizon now or wait and see what happens. You also have to weigh the fact that Android phones are getting better all the time, and that many are available now with 4G inside. There's no easy answer to the question, but here are a few starting points to help you make the right call.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: data pricing
I think it comes down to money really. If you purchase the Verizon iPhone 4 now for $299 (16GB) and must have the iPhone 5 when it's released, you could sell your iPhone 4 for at least $250 or more, then apply that to the likely full price of $699, you end up paying almost $500 overall for the phone, but at least you scratch that itch now and have your cake then eat it in June too. Of course this only is good if you really don't care about the costs and just need that Phone now.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: your need for speed
The first Verizon iPhone will only work on the older 3G network, which is reportedly more expansive and reliable than AT&T's, but it won't support the new 4G networks AT&T is building. You also can't talk and surf at the same time with Verizon 3G phones, if that sort of thing is a must-have for you.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: Evaluate quality of service
Verizon is said to have better service than AT&T, but that can depend greatly on your location. Many complaints about AT&T service in recent years have come from users in downtown San Francisco and Manhattan, where AT&T has admitted to working on upgrades to address network problems.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: New Features
The rumors about the iPhone 5 are rampant, everything from dual-core processors, 1080p HD video (with output connectivity!), improved battery life (using solar says one source) and other improvements make it seem the wait will be well worth it. However, on the flip side, there is little to no information as yet on what features the new iPhone 5 will include. Maybe it'll be a huge upgrade...maybe it won't.

Conclusion
Personally, since getting the Verizon phone at $299 (or $199) will get you locked into a 2 year contract which toward the end of that you will be at best 2 versions behind, I think waiting until June is the best option, the iPhone 5 won't nullify the 4 completely, but on top of all those months you have already been waiting and get an iPhone 5, also from Verizon, with whatever new features that Apple will be adding, and then, at long last, have the latest and greatest at the same time that you can finally get an Apple handset that works on your favorite network.
