Leaked Photo Suggests the Next iPod Nano Feature a Camera?

A recently leaked photo purported to be of Apple’s seventh-generation iPod nano surfaced revealing that the iPod nano will add a low-res 1.3 megapixel camera, eschew its clip, and retain its current small form factor and touch screen display. Citing a source called “Ray” from California, the Taiwanese site claims the iPod nano will lose the clip because it would interfere with the camera.

The larger fifth-generation nano included a video camera, widescreen display, and video playback. These features were stripped from the sixth-generation edition of the device in favor of smaller form with a belt clip on the back and a multitouch display.

The buzz that Apple will add a camera to the iPod nano again isn’t new. The camera rumors first popped up last month when a photo of the supposed seventh-gen nano showed the frame of the device with a space for a camera on the back.

The image posted by Taiwanese blog Apple.pro posted the photo but was unable to verify its authenticity. But the site is keen to remind readers that the website has correctly leaked each of the previous six-generations of iPod nanos.

If Apple’s usual habit of updating products on an annual cycle is any clue, the next iPod nano will likely debut this fall.

Two iPhone 5 Models Scheduled for Fall 2011 Release

Let’s keep it the way it is that Apple will be launching the iPhone 5 this September, but this time the sources have informed that Apple is reportedly building two iPhone 5 models for a scheduled fall release. According to an employee of an Apple part supplier, there is reason to believe that the iPhone 5 will actually be two devices: a ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ model.” This rumor makes sense in that Apple needs to release two versions to make up for the few months of delay.

“While the rest of the ordered components are just the standard versions, Apple is also ordering better quality components of the same function. Our source says that both types of components wouldn’t go in one device together, which makes him believe Apple is up to something with a ‘pro’ version.”

This latest iPhone 5 rumour comes via the iPhone Download Blog, who says that an Apple parts supplier employee has said that “there is reason to believe that the iPhone 5 will actually be two devices: a ‘standard’ and ‘pro’ model.” Apparently the source couldn’t come up with any other details but he does believe that Apple is working on 2 versions of the iPhone 5, what he calls a “normal and a pro version” and that Apple is ordering “components of similar function” but some are the “very best” that can be got now, while others are standard versions.

The guys say they believe their source is reliable on this matter, and also say that according to an Apple insider the iPhone 5 will release after the “Back to School” season in the fall. So what do our reader’s think on this latest iPhone 5 rumours, do you think Apple will release 2 models of the next iPhone?

How to connect iPad to iPhone personal hotspot

Apple’s options for moving files between your iPhone and iPad may not offer the company’s usual easy and intuitive flair, are you curious how to connect your iPad, new iPad 2, or even an iPod touch to iPhone personal hotspot? Thanks to iOS 4.3 (or iOS 4.2.6 on the Verizon iPhone) if you have a tethering plan you can save $130 on an iPad 3G, get an iPad Wi-Fi, and jump on the internet pretty much anywhere you want.

iOS 4..2.6 and iOS 4.3 lets iPhone 4 act as a Wi-Fi personal hotspot. In other words, it turns it into a tiny internet access point and mobile router. You can connect up to 3 devices to an AT&T/GSM iPhone and 5 devices to a Verizon iPhone — including the iPad. Here’s how:
1.Turn on Wi-Fi personal hotspot on your iPhone 4
2.On your iPad or iPad 2, launch Settings
3.Tap Wi-Fi in the sidebar
4.Tap iPhone 4 under Choose a Network…
5.Enter the Wi-Fi Password shown on your iPhone 4

A small, distinctive interlink icon will show up instead of the usual Wi-Fi icon at the top left of the menu bar and you’ll know you’re connected. Just keep an eye on your iPhone 4 battery life and, if you have a data cap, your Tethered Data usage!

Install Mac OS 10.7 Lion on a unsupported Mac system

The minimum requirements for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is a Core2Duo processor. These system requirements are being checked when you start the installation, if the requirements are not met then the install will be aborted. If you own another Mac that is capable of running Mac OS X 10.7 you can install this on a USB hard drive. And using the following trick it is possible to use your USB Hard Disk to install Mac OS X on a system that has unsupported hardware.

Run the installation on a Mac that meets the minimum system requirements. After installation, remove the property list: PlatformSupport.plist which can be found in the following folder.

Root ▸ System ▸ Library ▸ Coreservices

Now connect the external USB HDD to your Mac that isn’t supported and run in with the Alt ⌥ key pressed. Select the USB Hard Disk and Mac OS X 10.7 will start without any problems.

So if you own an old Mac and want to test Mac OS X Lion without using your current system, this might be the way to do it. This will probably not work in the final version, which will probably have multiple built-in checks.

Top 5 iPad magazines

On the market for less than a year, the iPad has forever changed magazines with the biggest names in publishing diving in head first — People, Popular Science, Wired and more. However, just because a publication has gone digital doesn’t mean it’s good. Here’s a quick hot or not look at the magazines available on the Apple tablet.

• Project ($0.99) — When I reviewed Richard Branson’s svelt, über cool digital magazine, I said it was worth paying for at least once. Since then, they’ve improved the app and slashed the price from $2.99 to $0.99 per issue. That said, I just bought an issue and suggest you give Project a read.

• Nylon ($2.99) — This women’s fashion and living mag for the iPad is another that’s being remade and remaking the future, a work in progress that’s already pretty darned good.

• ESPN ($9.99) — This mag is innovative and packed with features, the little things — pop ups, videos, infographics, AirPlay compatibility — that make this new digital medium engaging. The per issue price, however, is enough keep some people away.

• People (free w/ paper sub, $3.99) — If you already subscribe to the print edition, the iPad version is free, which is a nice value add. From a technical perspective, this isn’t the most advanced or engaging digital magazine, though perhaps that isn’t the most important thing when you need to feed a nagging Bradgelina addiction.

• Economist ($5.99) — The international gold standard for in-depth reporting and analysis framed by a political outlook that’s pro-business yet hasn’t lost its humanity.

These are just some samples of iPad magazines that you can have a try with. The best way to know which ones you like the most is to try them all out. If you want to rip DVD or convert video to your iPad, you may download free trial version of iPad Video Converter for Mac or DVD to iPad Converter for Mac.

Should I wait for the iPhone 5 or get the Verizon iPhone 4?

"Should I get a Verizon iPhone 4 or wait for the new iPhone 5 that is expected sometime in the summer?" This is the number one question come with the Verizon iPhone announcement this month. Most are saying to wait for the iPhone 5 due to the short wait of another 5-6 months and the exciting new possibilities of new technology that is going to come out.

The problem is that no one knows for sure what Apple's plans are, which means you'll have to decide whether to get your iTunes-loving, app-downloading' self an iPhone 4 on Verizon now or wait and see what happens. You also have to weigh the fact that Android phones are getting better all the time, and that many are available now with 4G inside. There's no easy answer to the question, but here are a few starting points to help you make the right call.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: data pricing
I think it comes down to money really. If you purchase the Verizon iPhone 4 now for $299 (16GB) and must have the iPhone 5 when it's released, you could sell your iPhone 4 for at least $250 or more, then apply that to the likely full price of $699, you end up paying almost $500 overall for the phone, but at least you scratch that itch now and have your cake then eat it in June too. Of course this only is good if you really don't care about the costs and just need that Phone now.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: your need for speed
The first Verizon iPhone will only work on the older 3G network, which is reportedly more expansive and reliable than AT&T's, but it won't support the new 4G networks AT&T is building. You also can't talk and surf at the same time with Verizon 3G phones, if that sort of thing is a must-have for you.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: Evaluate quality of service
Verizon is said to have better service than AT&T, but that can depend greatly on your location. Many complaints about AT&T service in recent years have come from users in downtown San Francisco and Manhattan, where AT&T has admitted to working on upgrades to address network problems.

Verizon iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 5: New Features
The rumors about the iPhone 5 are rampant, everything from dual-core processors, 1080p HD video (with output connectivity!), improved battery life (using solar says one source) and other improvements make it seem the wait will be well worth it. However, on the flip side, there is little to no information as yet on what features the new iPhone 5 will include. Maybe it'll be a huge upgrade...maybe it won't.

Conclusion
Personally, since getting the Verizon phone at $299 (or $199) will get you locked into a 2 year contract which toward the end of that you will be at best 2 versions behind, I think waiting until June is the best option, the iPhone 5 won't nullify the 4 completely, but on top of all those months you have already been waiting and get an iPhone 5, also from Verizon, with whatever new features that Apple will be adding, and then, at long last, have the latest and greatest at the same time that you can finally get an Apple handset that works on your favorite network.

Engineering images of iPhone 5 leaked?

IdealsChina claims to have received production diagrams of the iPhone 5. On the picture you see a device that looks very similar to the current iPhone 4, the device looks to have a larger screen in a similar housing. These images correspond with a display panel that appeared a few days ago, but it is also possible that these served as inspiration for these new images. Rumors about a curved aluminum back do not reflect to these models.

IdealsChina has now got hold of engineering diagrams of the new iPhone 5 which shows that it has larger screen.

“We just got what appears to be mold engineering drawings for iPhone 5. These would be used by case designers to create plastic, TPU, aluminum, silicone and leather cases. A while back we hear rumors that iPhone 5 would have a curved back but these images show iPhone 5 with the same form factor as iPhone 4 but with an edge to edge screen.
Interestingly enough, these images depict an iPhone 4-like design – with the same wrap-around antenna – but with a larger display and a thinner bezel. This larger display and thinner bezel goes hand in hand with reports from Digitimes and the Wall Street Journal, respectively.”

iPhone 5 Engineering images leaked:

It is possible that these drawings are made for accessory designers. Asian accessory creators are often involved in the early production process. Sometimes they are completely wrong, but they are regularly spot on. With the iPad 2 there also appeared several photographs and diagrams of covers, which were quite close to the original. So expect some more ‘leaked’ covers in the coming weeks.

3 ways to put music on the iPhone without using iTunes

One of the major functions of the iPhone is music playback. The iTunes app has been designed in such a way to take advantage of the iPhone’s touchscreen. But what if you want to listen to music that doesn’t reside in your iTunes library? Thanks to the incredible success of the App Store, there are plenty of ways now to access streaming music even when you don’t have the files. In this article, I will point out 3 other ways that you can transfer music to your iPhone without iTunes.

PwnPlayer
Pwnplayer is an iPhone music player app that acts as an alternative to the default ipod.app in your iPhone. Its user interface is almost similar to the iPod.app, allowing you to view your songs in Artists, Albums, Songs, Genre list etc. It also supports album art display.

Pandora
Pandora seems like the obvious choice, and it is. Pandora is a streaming music service based on the Music Genome Project that has become wildly popular on the Web and now has a pretty successful (free) iPhone app. Through the app, you can listen to specific stations that you have already created or even make new ones based on the patterns of music you already like. You can even vote up or down certain songs directly from within the app, and Pandora will figure out what about that song was different from others you voted on in order to tweak its offerings.

AOL Radio
But perhaps you don’t need something that will ferret out music that’s just like the music you already like. Perhaps you’re more the traditional radio type. That’s why we like AOL Radio’s free iPhone app—you can choose from any number of streaming stations, categorized into genres, to find one you like. Especially nice is the “Locals” feature, which allows you to search for streaming stations near your area.

These are just a handful of the options available to the music fan, if you want to rip your favorite music or audios from your own DVD or videos you can use iFunia DVD Ripper Pro to extract the music from the DVD.

Apple to Announce iPhone 5 and iOS 5 on June 5 to 9?

Apple has just announced the details of its Worldwide Developers Conference for 2011, firing up rumours that it’s planning to launch its next-gen smartphone at the San Francisco event. So will Apple announce the iPhone 5 – or whatever its name will be – on June 5? That’s what this screenshot taken from the Moscone Center website reveals with the usual “Corporate Meeting” placeholder. Historically, Apple has always held its iPhone announcement in early June, so there is no reason for that to change.

Yesterday two independent reports indicated the iPhone 5 will be launched at the end of June and the opposite thing – it will not launch until September. According to the South Korean news outlet ETNews.co.kr Apple will announce the iPhone 5 during the upcoming WWDC and will release it as usual by the end June simultaneously in many countries including South Korea (SK and TK).

The Loop, on the other hand, claims it has its sources who are still keen that there will be no iPhone 5 announcement at the WWDC. They insist it will be released in September instead.

Previous rumors have it that the iPhone 5 will have a dual core A5 chipset, an 8 megapixel camera, bigger internal storage (and screen eventually), NFC support and even a metal casing. We guess we’ll only know for sure this June.

What's new in Mac OS X 10.6.7

With a seventh beta already in developer hands, Apple’s just about ready to release their seventh Snow Leopard maintenance update. With a not ill-generous girth of 541.5MB, OS X 10.6.7 is an important patch even though it puts little if any new functionality to the table. Released with no known issues, developers and insiders report that Mac OS X 10.6.7, the seventh Snow Leopard maintenance update, is winding down with the final code expected to arrive in end user hands as early as next week. Apple has asked developers to focus their testing on the Safari, Mac App Store, Bonjour, SMB and Graphic Driver portions of the update.

It will be interesting to see whether we simply get refreshed graphic drivers or if something more substantial gets delivered — game maker Valve among others has identified a number of graphics performance issues.

That said, the considered wisdom of the blogsphere is that no new features will debut in Mac OS X 10.6.7 with Apple pushing out new functionality until the release of Mac OS X Lion, which is expected this Summer. When it arrives, Lion will sport a number of iOS-inspired features, including Launchpad, full-screen apps, and a new version of Exposé, a.k.a. Mission Control, where users can access and manage open applications.

Survey shows 82% Of Tablet Buyers Want The iPad

Apple iPad 2 is now available and according to a new survey, the majority of those that want a tablet want an iPad. Say what you will about other tablets beating the iPad at the specs game, I think this chart speaks volume for which one people actually want. This is based on a survey of more than 3,000 people, and more than 80% of those planning to get a tablet want the iPad. I think really effectively shows that it’s not all about a pissing competition for processors and memory, it’s about user experience.

The second chart demonstrates how satisfied iPad owners are with their device. 70 percent are very satisfied, 25 percent are somewhat satisfied, with those that are not satisfied making up a tremendously small amount.

Finally, those considering purchasing the iPad were asked what, if any, wireless service provider they would use for their 3G iPad and where they would purchase an iPad. Those providing answers indicated they would purchase the WiFi version of the iPad and would do so from Best Buy, Wal-Mart or Target.

Common video Codecs

A video codec is software that enables video compression and or decompression for digital video. The compression usually employs lossy data compression. Historically, video was stored as an analog signal on magnetic tape. Around the time when the compact disc entered the market as a digital-format replacement for analog audio, it became feasible to also begin storing and using video in digital form and a variety of such technologies began to emerge.

Most video files have at least two different types: the container, and the codec.
* A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data, compressed in a manner of standardized codecs. The container describes the structure of the file: where the various pieces are stored, how they are interleaved, and which codecs are used by which pieces. It may also specify an audio codec as well as video.
* Codec, short for compressor/decompressor, allows you to store the digital music, photos, and movies in the form of compact, manageable files, which can then be opened or decompressed to deliver the original contents. The common video codecs include DivX, XviD, 3ivx, MPEG(MPEG-1,2,3,4), ReadVideo.

A video can be thought of as being made up of numerous snapshots, called frames. Frame rate is the number of still pictures per unit of time of video, and most often expressed in frames per second (fps). Motion pictures shot on film do so at 24 FPS. Both video and audio file resolution is measured in kilobytes per second (kbps) — that is, how many thousands of bytes it takes to store one second of sound or videos. This figure is known as the bitrate. A higher bitrate allows better video quality.

Detail information of common video codecs:
MPEG ("Moving Pictures Expert Group"): three video formats, MPEG 1, 2, and 4.
MPEG-1: Old, supported by everything (at least up to 352x240), reasonably efficient. A good format for the web.
MPEG-2: A souped-up version of MPEG-1, with better compression. 720x480. Used in HDTV, DVD, and SVCD.
MPEG-4: A family of codecs, some of which are open, others Microsoft proprietary.
MPEG spinoffs: mp3 (for music) and VideoCD.

MJPEG ("Motion JPEG"): A codec consisting of a stream of JPEG images. Common in video from digital cameras, and a reasonable format for editing videos, but it doesn't compress well, so it's not good for web distribution.

DV ("Digital Video"): Usually used for video grabbed via firewire off a video camera. Fixed at 720x480 @ 29.97FPS, or 720x576 @ 25 FPS. Not very highly compressed.

WMV ("Windows Media Video"): A collection of Microsoft proprietary video codecs. Since version 7, it has used a special version of MPEG4.

RM ("Real Media"): a closed codec developed by Real Networks for streaming video and audio. Maybe also a container?

DivX: in early versions, essentially an ASF (incomplete early MPEG-4) codec inside an AVI container; DivX 4 and later are a more full MPEG-4 codec.. No resolution limit. Requires more horsepower to play than mpeg1, but less than mpeg2. Hard to find mac and windows players.

Sorenson 3: Apple's proprietary codec, commonly used for distributing movie trailers (inside a quicktime container).

Quicktime 6: Apple's implementation of an MPEG4 codec.

RP9: a very efficient streaming proprietary codec from Real (not MPEG4).

WMV9: a proprietary, non-MPEG4 codec from Microsoft.

The reason why we should convert videos to an H.264 format

With VLC Media Player, you can now play just about any filetype, from AVIs to WMVs. So you know all those home movies you took with your video camera, or video you’ve downloaded from sources other than the iTunes Store? No need to convert them any more, just dump them into VLC.

Playback is fairly smooth and devoid of stutters, with looks comparable to videos in the YouTube app. It does have trouble with high definition video files with resolutions of 720p and above. For that, you’ll still have to convert to an H.264 format. I found color reproduction to be sub par, and there is a noticeable level of artifacting. But that is to be expected, because these alternative codecs do not have support for hardware accelerated playback like H.264 does. This means that playback of the video is handled entirely by the processor, instead of having hardware level access to the device’s graphics capabilities.

Videophiles will most likely stick to converting videos and playing them natively.
